The objective of this article was to identify the influence of public governance practices on the performance of 63 (sixty-three) federal universities in the country, through multivariate statistical analysis. The results of the research indicate the governance represented by the mechanisms - structure, strategy and control - explain 63% of the observed value of performance. Suggest, however, that federal universities should improve the governance practices related to the control mechanism so that it performs better. It also indicates a need for more in-depth thinking on the benefits that good governance practices can bring to them. Thus, it is suggested that future research examine the question of governance through qualitative research and include in the sample also the private universities.
